This is a research project that can be applied to ANY country. Ours just happens to be Brazil, where I know, they speak Portuguese...
In our class however, this activity goes along with the Spanish novel, "Ciudad de las Bestias" by Isabelle Allende. We are reading this novel (which can be found online in PDF format) in Spanish IV. One place the story takes place is in Manaus, Brazil, so I created a travel project which really engaged the students.
They have to complete 8 steps to "create a trip/adventure" to Manaus, and then present their research (all in Spanish) to the class.
Some of the items they must research and document include:
-Filling out a passport application
-Packing for a specific climate
-Researching airfare and flight routes
-Reserving a hotel on a limited budget
-Perusing travel websites to plan an itinerary
The students present, the class gets to see/compare what everyone has discovered, and the class gets to vote on the BEST THREE presentations. I provide prizes as incentives for hard work.
***NOTE*** This is completely in Spanish! I don't have an English version. It's for an upper-level Spanish class. It's in WORD, so it can be edited to suit your needs.
