This is a flexible, easy-to-use document for assisting in maintaining routine and accountability.
The front side of this document has a blank space for Monday through Wednesday (Thursday and Friday are on the back) and a place for the students to write in the date as well as check off how they are feeling in Spanish. I display the warm-ups on the board and the students write them in the blank spaces. The emojis help start the class in Spanish. I will ask students how they are at the beginning of class or I will walk around and glance at the students' papers as they do their warm-up. I have found that this is a simple way to get the students to use the target language. As their abilities increase, I increase the level of follow up questions. If a student puts down a negative feeling, it provides an opportunity to be able to help that student as well.
On the back, there is a checklist that I use for giving the students participation grades. This can be done daily or weekly depending on what is right for your students and you, but it is there for the students to view at any time so that the expectations are clear. I used to collect them on Fridays, grade them, and then return them to the students with feedback. However, I now enter the grades daily and I use it as a framework for those grades.
