Spanish cultural activity – El MATE
This is a cultural lesson created in a power point showcasing “El Mate”, a typical beverage from Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. The power point explains why “el mate” is a lot more than just a simple beverage, it’s a key part of the culture of these countries. It would be a great addition to your cultural activities.
The presentation includes an explanation of what is “el mate”, who drinks it, when they drink it and why. It also includes two videos. One video is a tutorial on how to make a “mate” and the second video is a TV ad from Yerba Sara (yerba is the main ingredient used in el mate). This commercial is a great representation of why “el mate” is a lot more than just a simple beverage. Finally, the power point includes a cultural comparison between “el mate” and coffee in the US. Due to copyright laws, I cannot name or include the video of a very famous coffee place in the US. You know, the one that is two words and they both start with a D. However, I do include a link to one of their ads in Spanish so students can compare its meaning with the meaning of the yerba ad.
The lesson packet has editable comprehension activities to go along with the two videos shown in the power point and a worksheet for the cultural comparison. This lesson can be used with all high school Spanish levels.
