November is always a busy month but here is an opportunity to add some additional sparkle to your reading program that is relevant for this month. Here are four new readers that contain the repetitive text "We can" with a verb. Both fiction and non fiction stories have been created which reflect the new Common Core standards that are being implemented in most districts.Once again students use a variety of skills to interact with the text in a purposeful way, building print awareness in an engaging manner. There is a strong focus on contextualizing sight words and building academic vocabulary. I have also included sentence strips that can be built in a pocket chart to practice the text before using the emergent readers. Everyone can be a reader!
Here are the titles for November:
1. We Can Play Ball: This is a cut and paste reader which has students make connections between pictures and words. Students
also have the opportunity to add in a setting.
2. We Can Eat Turkey: This is a Thanksgiving reader about all the foods you might eat at your holiday meal but the real focus is on beginning sounds and letter writing practice. It's a nice additional to your seasonal projects.
3. We Can Thank Veterans: This is an age appropriate book for this important national holiday but it can also be used for a patriotic unit. It raises student awareness of these important heroes.
4. We Can Have Technology: This reader reflects 21st century tools that students are using in the classroom. Students have an opportunity to write a sight word with a capital at the beginning of each sentence. For ELLs this builds academic vocabulary.
This could be used for RTI as well as part of your primary special education program.
Please note that I also have other sets of readers (Sparkle Readers
#1, #2, #3 and #4 in my TpT store. Be sure to visit my blog for additional ideas for literacy. I hope November is full of sparkle for you and your students!
