As students begin reading the novel "Speak", they will be working on exploring cliques that exist in their high school. Together in small groups, I ask them to brainstorm cliques and the characteristics of those cliques. We discuss stereotyping and the effect it has on one's choice of friend group. Then students create a similar graphic organizer on the cliques that Melinda identifies in the opening pages of "Speak".
There are also several comprehension questions that students have to answer on the first few pages of "Speak". These questions are attached to this sheet as well.
