8 classes of reading - 8 5-point comprehension bell ringer quizzes with answers, and 1 30-point comprehension test with answers for Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak.
This unit is designed to allow students to read organically in that students will be quizzed on basic comprehension and not a weighty analysis. If they can answer most of the questions daily, it shows they are on track. By using a comprehension test at the end of the unit, students can show that they read the novel. Instead of hitting them from every corner with vocabulary, critical thinking, and analysis, this unit is designed to allow kids to get back to the basics of reading, specifically enjoyment.
Personally, I allow students a full 100% if they can prove they read the novel and comprehended it by earning a minimum of 70% on the final assessment.
Note: I have my Masters degree in Reading and Literacy and have taught English and Reading for 7 years. I can assure you that students who have not read the novel will not pass with a 70%. This is my way of ensuring they read closely and picture what they read in their minds!
