This graphic organizer created by Contextual Classroom is a simplified version of the SOAPSTONE strategy for studying speeches. Students are asked to identify the speaker of the speech by recording prior knowledge and/or information that they found through research, describe the occasion of the speech (when, where, and why the speech is being given), and to whom the speech is addressed (which influences the tone and purpose of the speech.
This organizer can be used in conjunction with the Powerpoint and activity packet created by Contextual Classroom on Barack Obama's 2004 Democratic Convention Keynote Speech. This is also useful for any other speech you may study with your students.
This is easy to collect for an in-class grade or participation points or to be used as an activity for students to complete prior to starting a speech lesson in class. It can also be used during class as a brief research assignment.
