Product Description

These are 2 print-and-go speaking activities to practice communication in English! The theme is CAMPING. Students use prompt to decide which supplies they need for a camping trip, and talk about activities they would rather do while camping. Lots of speaking, lots of target language, lots of high frequency vocabulary, and lots of passionate discussion.

Perfect for ESL (ELLs) from middle school through high school (and honestly, I've used them at the college level too!).

Discussion #1:

You're going on a camping trip with the class, and you have to choose only 8 items from the list of supplies. Everyone has to agree- students get really passionate about fighting for "their" choices. First, I have them work in partners. Next, I put groups of 6 together, and they have to argue their points, and come to an agreement. Finally, I do it as a whole class.

Discussion #2:

Super fun "would you rather" game, all about camping. Would you rather ...look at the stars at night or listen to music by the fire? ...camp on the beach or camp in the mountains? I also like to start with partners, and then have a class discussion on what everyone prefers.

I start out many classes with these easy communicative activities, to practice speaking (and listening to their partners!) and get students using the target language. Remember that the students who are most shy may never volunteer to participate in front of the whole class, so if they work in partners or small groups first, they can practice what they want to say, and feel more comfortable saying their opinion in English- and then they are more likely to volunteer their answer to the whole class activity. ALSO: These are great, simple activities for your sub folder.
