This is a two-part speaking drill for ESL students. It has been effectively used with ESL students whose speak Korean or Mandarin as a first language, specifically due to the sounds being tested (e.g. /l/ /r/).
In the first section, students simply read the sentences given and teachers listen for pronunciation of appropriate sounds. In the second section, students choose 10 words from the first section, number them on their page, and say them to the teacher. The teacher then writes down the word that they hear - this is like a reverse dictation and allows students to realize what sounds others hear when they speak.
