Product Description
Use this lesson as a way to break down what a good public speaker looks like and prevent common mistakes in your students’ speeches! This activity can be flexibly used before any speech assignment of your choosing and is appropriate for a variety of grade levels, especially if students aren’t performing where you think they should for public speaking skills.

This gradual release lesson starts with a PowerPoint of 7 “sins” or don’ts in speaking (including things like swaying, nervous fidgeting, etc.) and also breaks down how to deal with tough issues like eye contact and what to do with your hands! It then transitions into some group practice and an individual feedback and reflection opportunity to identify what mistakes students are making in their own presenting.

This lesson became very memorable with my students – it was frequently mentioned in surveys as one of the best life lessons/ takeaways from the year, and we reinforced these concepts each time we watched or assessed speeches. It can be a lot of fun, especially when you let students demonstrate some of the “don’ts”!

This download includes:
• 19-slide PowerPoint lesson
• 2-page set of Guided Notes
• PDF copies of both (in addition to editable files)
