This unit is used starting in September and lasts all year long. Each student is assigned to speak one day each week. The first week of the month is a show and tell. The second week changes topics each month. The third week students give a book talk and the fourth week is poetry reading. Included in this product is a parent letter to explain the task and a sheet to send home for the second week of the month as this is the week that changes. The Common Core Standards are listed for speaking and listening.
Is there a different prompt each week?
No, there is not. However, week two of each month has a different topic that relates to the month or season. So, there are 9 different prompts throughout the year that students present during week two. Students do present different items for show and tell, a new book each month, and also a new poem each month they have read or memorized. We have found authentic differentiation happens when students choose a different item or experience for show and tell, books to present at their reading and interest level, and a favorite poem that they have worked to memorize and share or read fluently.
