Speaking and Listening (Accountable Talk in the Primary Grades)
Accountable talking stems are a very effective way to engage students in listening and speaking. I have found in the early
grades that children do best by focusing on a few of the first talking stems.
I have also found that we, as teachers, often assume that children will be able to understand and use these talking stems
after being introduced to them. However, there will be many children that need more direct instruction in using the language
of the talking stems.
This packet has ideas for introducing these stems in small steps with lots of practice, before incorporating them into group
