Perfect for ELLs, this game allows a small group to practice listening and speaking skills as they describe and draw cupcakes!

This game is ideal for a small group of four or five students. It was designed with ESL students in mind, but can be used with all kids! Print, cut and laminate the cards, and make copies of the blank masters. Model being the speaker first. Describe a cupcake using the sentence cards, lots of details, and encourage the students to ask you clarifying questions (is it dark blue or light blue? Is it thick or thin?). Students will use crayons to color the blank cupcake the way you have described. I’ve included 4 blank cupcakes on the master so that multiple students can take a turn speaking. When the directions are finished, turn over cupcake and pick a student’s cupcake that looks the most like it. This student can be the speaker next. The speaker will pick a cupcake card and use details to describe it to the listeners, without showing them the card. The speaker can use the speaking cards to help describe the cupcake (and develop powerful language skills!). After everyone has had a turn describing a cupcake, students can then draw their cupcake on the cupcake writing page and write sentences describing it, using the language supports provided. Have fun!
