Hi! My name is Kate Bailey, and my store is called "Get EnglishEd." (Get it? :))
I used this PowerPoint to start off the year with my 10th graders. This activity, however, would work with any high school class. I wanted to begin this discussion about belief or "standing for something" because in World Literature, students must be able to understand other points of view. To do that, they must understand their own beliefs first.
I found interesting information about the typical "millenial" from the Washington Post that I wanted to share with the kids. They found this discussion absolutely invigorating. They loved discussing the kind of "prejudice" members of society had against their age group. Slowly, they began to realize that not caring about important issues was really uncool. It was about time they started speaking with conviction --> cue Taylor Mali video "Like totally, whatever." (SO AMAZING!)
This PowerPoint must be used by a teacher who is willing to have that conversation and discussion with her/her kids. This is a one-day activity that opens lots of possibilities for writing assignments, research, readings, and projects. This gets students thinking about themselves and the world around them.
