This foldable introduces special cases/identifying number of solutions to linear equations in a visual way. Students are given balanced scales with a given value on either or both sides. Students must choose one number that can be placed into every remaining box on the scale to keep it balanced. Some scales will be satisfied by only one value, others will be satisfied by any value, and others will not be satisfied by any value.
Students will then write an equation for each scale, solve it algebraically, and determine how many solutions there are to each equation.
This is a great introduction to special cases and number of solutions or to reteach for students who are having a difficult time grasping the concept.
