Thank you for your purchase! You are purchasing Step #2 of 3.
Step #1 is the Emotion & Behavior Posters
Step # 3 is the Graphic Organizer Behavior Folder.
The “Safe Zone” is built upon a 3-step process.
First, teach the student in a calm state about the system using the Emotion & Behavior Posters. Go through each step and explain what it means and how it can be used. Talk about where they will be and how they will be used before, during, or after their “lava” rises. It may seem like a young concept for some children, but when their behaviors escalate they will need the simplicity of the posters. I’ve used this on 4th graders and they were fine with it.
Secondly, when the students is escalating encourage them to go to the designated “Safe Zone” and go through the steps by themselves… ask if they need help. Come back to help them complete the steps. If they cannot go to the “Safe Zone” and have a meltdown…go through your school or behavioral procedures (or BIP) …then in de-escalation have them go through the steps to return to their activity. (Steps can be hung on the wall or put in a binder)
Thirdly, when the student can successfully manage behaviors or needs reminders in class, the Graphic Organizer Behavior Folder is a smaller portable version that can be printed, cut, glued, and laminated on a folder for durability and visual reminders.
