This special factoring patterns help sheet is perfect to use when first teaching special factoring patterns or reviewing the concept. I created this when I realized how difficult it is for some students to apply the patterns (which are written with variables) to examples with numbers. It is easy for students to forget to find the square or cube root of a number. The color coordination helps students visualize the factoring patterns. The colored boxes should be filled and require no further calculations. The colored parenthesis should be filled with the appropriate value, but may require some calculations before the expression can be written in simplest form. I encourage students to place the help sheets in sheet protectors where they can use them over and over again with dry erase markers. Students can write the values in the boxes. They can then transfer their answers onto paper. Some students use the help sheet for a few problems until they get the gist of the process; other students continue to use it, even as we go into new chapters. Definitely a great tool for students!!!
