This powerpoint lesson teaches students to identify and write the names of special places, people and animals with capital letters and use special names of places, people, and animals in sentences. The presentation opens with a title page in which the teacher can point to the pictures and say, for example, "This is a dog. Do you have a dog? Dog is the name of the animal, but what is the special name that you have for him?" The next slide is a picture of Sponge Bob and a regular sponge, this leads the topics of discussion between a regular noun and special names. The next slides lists the objectives for the lesson. Next, a description of special names "proper nouns" are listed along with higher order thinking prompts for discussion. Then, a journal activity is presented in which students are invited to list as many special people, places, and animals as they can in one minute. The following slide gives students sentences in which they must identify the proper nouns in each sentence. Next is a Kagan shoulder partner activity with special names. After the shoulder partner activity, a page is shown for a review/closure discussion on special names. Last, is a congratulatory slide for their great job and participation in the lesson.
