This cooking unit is for students with severe to moderate disabilities. It allows all students to be engaged in a large group setting. All the lessons are interactive whether they are at the smart board or at their desk. Depending on your class size, the unit takes 2-4 weeks to teach. When it came time for them to cook, I noticed an increase in the skills required for them to follow the recipe with the least amount of prompting. In addition to the smart board activities the unit includes the following worksheets: time, elapse time, recipe review, and a grading rubric. Regardless of the severity of their disability all students loved the unit, were engaged, and demonstrated growth for the following skills, time, elapse time, measurement, reading, following multiple directions, recognizing ingredients/cooking utensils, speech, increased the amount of time focused on an activity, and taking turns.
