Essential Concepts About Print Skills
Upper and Lowercase Letter Forms and Simple Punctuation
Developed for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Grade One Teachers
Specific Concepts is one of the five components of Concepts About Print. It addresses letter knowledge and simple punctuation. Numerous studies have indicated that the best predictor of first-year reading achievement is a child’s letter knowledge and ability to recognize and name upper and lowercase letters accurately and fluently. Beginning readers also need explicit instruction with punctuation to understand its purpose, the changes in voice and the effect it has on the author’s message.
