Students measure the specific gravity of minerals and learn how this value is helpful to identify rocks and minerals. Directions to run the activity are completely described and two procedures are offered: one uses spring scales while the other uses triple beam balances. Graphic notes are also provided on the topic of specific gravity at beginning and increasing levels of understanding. A data table that lists the specific gravities of rocks and minerals commonly found in rock kits is also included.
Another easy inquiry lab is to place limestone and granite in vinegar and measure any mass loss.
