This resource is perfect for use by speech-language pathologists or teachers for instruction of English/Language Arts Common Core Standards vocabulary words. This book will enable students to classify critical terms into corresponding categories. These include categories such as parts of speech vocabulary, types of literature, story vocabulary, types of nouns, types of sentences, multiple meaning words, figurative language, synonyms, antonyms, text features etc.
Students need to learn ways to effectively organize and input academic content into their brains so they can easily retrieve the information. Direct instruction in categorization will enable students with and without language disorders and language based learning disabilities to improve their receptive vocabulary knowledge. This resource may contribute to improving their short term, working memory, and long term memory skills. The category book was designed for use with students in grades 3-5. However, this is also a good review for 6th grade students in the middle school setting.
I have used this resource successfully with numerous students over the years in language therapy sessions. I have a laminated book that I use during whole group instruction and then the students make their own with guided practice. I glued the pages on file folders to increase durability, but you can also print on card stock paper.
