I use this assignment to kick off my formal Speech assessments. It allows students to gain experience in expository speaking in a supported manner. Students collaborate in groups in topic development and research, but each student is individually accountable and individually graded based on their performance. All the protocols of expository speaking can be introduced and practiced...outlining and organizing ideas, finding and evaluating source materials, attributing sourced material, differentiating between claims of fact and value, as well as delivery skills. The panel format allows students to sit together and it serves to create a sense of collective expertise during the Q&A which follows.
