These Speech Reinforcer Mats are a simple reinforcer that you can use with most students, a range of goals and most of all… FLEXIBLY! The basic concept is that your students add things on to these mats as an open-ended reinforcement. They are particularly motivating because your students can CREATE their own little scene to show that they met their goals. With 100 mats in total (10 mats per theme), these are a different kind of reinforcement option for those mixed groups or to motivate your students.

Some implementation ideas include:

  1. Use for 1:1 immediate reinforcement (e.g. practice a sound, put a bead on the picture)
  2. Do your work and ‘earn’ objects to place on the picture at the END of an activity
  3. Can be used as behavior support
  4. Set specific goals for number of correct "If you get 5 in a row correct, you can put a block on your Mat"
  5. Set specific goals for number of practices "Let's practice 10 sentences and then you can create your picture"

What can you put ON the mats?

I usually use whatever I have multiples of in my room: blocks, pom poms, mini erasers, beads, paper clips, small objects, dry erase markers and play dough. I have a blog post all about using “Little Things” in therapy, so head on over to get some ideas on the inexpensive things that I collect that you can use these with.
