This therapy activity focuses on helping students practice their ability to maintain the topic when conversing. There are 3 activities.
Includes: 40 color flash cards, a game board and a worksheet.
Maintaining the Topic : Using the 40 conversation starter cards, prompt the student to add to the conversation by asking, “What would you say next?” Initially, provide models for the students to help them understand expected responses when commenting and asking a question on topic when conversing.
Topic Maintenance Game: Place the conversation cards face down on the game board (page 5). Choose a card. Have the student roll the die. If he/she rolls a 1,2 or 3, the student is asked to add an on topic comment to the conversation. If he/she rolls a 4, 5 or 6 the student is asked to ask an on topic question. Students can play for one turn or challenge themselves to develop multiple comments or questions on topic. Students can also work together as a group adding on topic comments/ questions to the conversation card by alternating turns.
I Can Stay on Topic: Once the student has completed and practiced topic maintenance with activities 1 and 2, he/she can proudly show their ability to stay on topic by completing 1 of the 2 fun worksheets.
