Monster Pet Shop is a fun activity that can be used to address a variety of therapy goals, including expanding utterance length, providing attributes, improving word retrieval, following directions, listening for details, using descriptions, and comparing and contrasting. You can also tack on some written language fun!
In this activity, one person (or group) is the customer and he/she marches into the Monster Pet Shop with a very specific pet monster in mind. That person has to describe the pet monster he longs for so that the pet shop sales associate (another student/group) can find it. This activity can be modified to decrease the number of monsters available or include less or more similar monsters, depending on the level of your group. A cue card is included for use if needed.
There are literally dozens of great monster themed storybooks out there to pair with this activity. You can also use it to tack on some written language practice. For example, have the sales associate write out a "receipt" for the customer, which describes the monster in detail. You can also use Venn diagrams for comparing and contrasting the different monsters. Students can take home the monsters and discover they have to go out of town on business! Uh-oh! Who will take care of their pet monster? They better post an ad for a "pet monster sitter" and leave detailed instructions on how to take care of their precious and much-loved pet monster. The possibilities for add-on activities are endless-just use your imagination!
