CFY SLP- speech and language therapy survival guide for your clinical fellowship year!

First of all- congratulations, CFY-SLP! You made it through (or are almost through) graduate school- you ROCK. That is a huge accomplishment, and you should be proud. I’m hoping to help make your clinical fellowship year a whole lot easier with this packet. I want you to learn from my mistakes. This packet is a brutally honest (and sometimes hilarious) recounting of how I learned to do speech and language therapy the right way, starting with experience gained as soon as I started writing CFY-SLP after my name, all the way to the present. These are the approaches that I’ve found to work best for me. I hope they help you, too.

This packet will be beneficial if you are a CFY-SLP working with school-aged students (preschool- middle school). My experience has been working in outpatient settings, elementary schools, and middle schools.

Here's what this speech and language therapy activities and resources guide includes:

(2) Implementing AAC Pages: if you’ve never worked with AAC before, and you have a student who is non-verbal or minimally verbal, you might feel overwhelmed about it. I get it. I’ve been there. I’m going to discuss all the tips and tricks based on things such as the use of core vocabulary, and focusing on single words before building sentences. These are the techniques that have worked for ME in this section. If you’ve seen or done things differently, this is by no means the only way to go about implementing AAC. I’m just sharing these tips because they have been rigorously tested in my therapy room.

(2) Describing Goals Pages: I’m providing some ideas on what works- and what doesn’t- when it comes to targeting describing goals. In addition, I’m providing you with some graphic organizers (and examples!) to get you going.

(2) Verbs pages: how do I target verbs? Chances are, you’ll see IEP goals targeting this skill. I go into detail about exactly HOW I do it, and provide 2 organizers to get you started, including an open-ended resource that allows you to document verbs you’d want to target from a story.

(1) Plurals page: On this page, I explain my favorite tips and tricks for targeting regular and irregular plurals! I’ve also included some regular plurals and irregular plurals task cards for you, as well as a “regular plurals” basic rules chart.

(3) Remediating a Lisp pages: I go over the basics about how I correct a lisp on these pages. You can do it!

(2) Correcting an /r/ pages: You’re going to run into prevocalic /r/ and vocalic /r/. (Really, you can't miss it!) Don’t worry. I’m sharing my favorite tips and tricks.

(1) Stop Insertion guide: your student says “f-ball” for “fall”? I’ve been there.

(1) Velars page: these are my tried-and-true methods for eliciting the /k/ and /g/ sounds.

(2) Phonological Disorders pages: you’re going to want to know where to start when you have a student on your caseload who is incredibly difficult to understand. I’ll tell you what didn’t work for me, and then explain what you should do when treating a student who demonstrates a phonological disorder.

We all make mistakes, and that’s okay. The important thing is that you learn from those mistakes. You rock, and you are going to absolutely crush your clinical fellowship year. Just don’t forget- it’s okay to ask for help, and keep an extra copy of this guide on your desk!
