Description

CFY SLP- speech and language therapy survival guide for your clinical fellowship year!

First of all- congratulations, CFY-SLP! You made it through (or are almost through) graduate school- you ROCK. That is a huge accomplishment, and you should be proud. I’m hoping to help make your clinical fellowship year a whole lot easier with this packet. I want you to learn from my mistakes. This packet is a brutally honest (and sometimes hilarious) recounting of how I learned to do speech and language therapy the right way, starting with experience gained as soon as I started writing CFY-SLP after my name, all the way to the present. These are the approaches that I’ve found to work best for me. I hope they help you, too.

This packet will be beneficial if you are a CFY-SLP working with school-aged students (preschool- middle school). My experience has been working in outpatient settings, elementary schools, and middle schools.

What this is:

A survival guide that you can reference to help you feel confident during your CFY year. This resource was COMPLETELY REVISED in December 2020.

I'm sharing my absolute best tips and tricks for the following topics:

AAC Basics: If you’ve never worked with AAC before, and you have a student who is non-verbal or minimally verbal, you might feel overwhelmed about it. I get it. I’ve been there. I’m going to discuss all the tips and tricks based on things such as the use of core vocabulary, and focusing on single words before building sentences. These are the techniques that have worked for ME in this section. If you’ve seen or done things differently, this is by no means the only way to go about implementing AAC. I’m just sharing these tips because they have been rigorously tested in my therapy room.

Grammar and Syntax: This section is PACKED with information on how to work on regular and irregular past tense verbs, regular and irregular plural nouns, and conjunctions. It also provides an introduction to sentence diagramming, so that you can better understand (and feel comfortable teaching) a variety of sentence structures to your students.

Defining and Describing: In this section, I explain how I work on categorization skills, defining & describing using attributes, and completing analogies

Phonological Disorders: you’re going to want to know where to start when you have a student on your caseload who is incredibly difficult to understand. I’ll tell you what didn’t work for me, and then explain what you should do when treating a student who demonstrates a phonological disorder. This section walks you through my typical therapy session.

Treating a Lisp: I have taken extensive coursework in this area, and I have SO much to share you with you! Correcting a lisp doesn't need to be scary. I'll explain, step-by-step, exactly how I correct a lisp.

Tackling Vocalic R: My FAVORITE thing to do? Correct vocalic r. I'm sharing the strategies that WORK, time and time again, with my students- and they will work for yours, too. I want you to be EXCITED to work with your R students- because seeing the progress makes it all worth it!

Random Articulation Things: In this section, I discuss some other "miscellaneous" topics that you will certainly encounter and will DEFINITELY find useful. I'll explain how I get those velar sounds (k and g), what to do about stop insertion, and how I get my students to produce /sh/ and /ch/.

Easy to Play (or Make) Therapy Games: Quick ideas you can use TODAY in therapy.

How I Stay Organized (Sneak Peak Into My SLP Planner): It seriously took me YEARS to figure out how to keep all of those papers organized! I'm sharing a sneak peak at how I organize my SLP Planner, in case you'd like to try out my method, too.
