"Speech to the Virginia Convention"
This is a unit on persuasive speech using Henry's "Speech to the Virginia Convention" as the anchor text.
This has Word documents, PDF documents, and one PowerPoint, which total 22 pages and 27 slides.
The text includes background and footnotes.
There are 10 vocabulary words (with answer key) and a quiz that has 10 true-false questions, 10 multiple-choice questions, and 10 vocabulary questions (with answer key).
There is also a PowerPoint that covers persuasive speech and is broken into the 3 types of appeals (logical, emotional, and ethical), Henry's writing technique (concession to the opposition), and the allusions he used in the text.
The PPT also highlights these examples in the text and gives the line numbers so students can follow along easily.
I use this unit as part of my Revolutionary Period of literature, and I also use it to introduce persuasive writing.
After this unit, I have students write a persuasive essay. You could use it as a mini unit or you could incorporate it into a larger unit.
This unit is Common Core aligned.
