This Speed Dating Activity provides teachers with 18 equations with multiple variables. Cards need to be copied, cut out and distributed to students. Students solve the problem and become experts at their problem. They will meet with the partner that has the same card to confirm they have the same answer and correct steps to solve. From there, one partner stays, and the other moves on to their next “math date!” Students trade problems, solve, and check their work with the expert. Continue rotating until everyone in the class has solved all the equations.
- Copy one set of problems on one color of paper, and another set on a different color. This helps to tell which student to stay seated and which should rotate.
- If there are an odd number of students, set a problem at a desk with the answer written on the back for students to check their work.
- Ask students if they are “falling in love” with math. ☺
I used this activity with my students and they were cracking up at the fact that they were "Speed Dating" in math class. I played into it a little bit and played some funny love music in the background. Kids did 13 practice problems (I had 26 students) and had fun while doing so. They were helping their partners when they got stuck on the problem because they were the experts. It was an awesome day in math class! :)
