This score sheet allows students to peruse 25 librarian-selected titles in a "speed date" setting. The books are placed throughout the library (or classroom) with number signs. The sign could also include the title, author, and genre, if desired. Students start their "date" by writing down the title, author, and genre on the score sheet...next to the corresponding number. Next, students read the back of the book, look at a few pictures (if present), and read the first few paragraphs (or pages if it's a picture book). At the end of three minutes, a RoMaNTiC song (something like "Endless Love," maybe?) will alert students that the date is over. Before moving to the next number, students rate their date on the heart to sad face scale. Notes could also be included, especially if students are interested in the book and want to remember what the book is about! Brain breaks should be taken every five dates or so...to keep students engaged. Although 25 books are chosen...and there are 25 rows on the score sheet...you don't need to have students "check out" every book...maybe just 10 or 15. Other topics include "Speed Dating with Dewey," "Speed Dating with Nonfiction," or "Speed Dating with Graphic Novels."
