As soon as I give my students a timed, oral reading fluency assessment, they start to SPEED READ! I use these Tickets & Warnings as a FUN way to slow down their reading.
These Reading Speeding Tickets and Warnings should be used as a FUN way to reinforce reading with EXPRESSION, proper RATE, ACCURACY, and pausing for PUNCTUATION. Students should NOT be or feel punished for the way they read.
When a student is caught speed reading, a speeding ticket can be given or they can get away with a warning! They must accept the warning or pay the fine by completing the fun activity.
There are 3 levels of Fines (fluency passages):
*Easy – Fluency passages contain many high frequency and easily decodable words.
*Medium – Fluency passages contain multisyllabic words students may decode using the chunking strategy.
*Hard – Fluency passages contain challenging vocabulary words.
There are 3 kinds of Warnings: Punctuation, Expression, and Rate. Each Warning has 3 levels of activities for your students to complete!
*Speeding Tickets/Fines should be printed double-sided. The Speeding Ticket is filled out in the front and your students complete the Fine on the back.
*Warnings can be printed one-sided or if you have a student that needs to work on more than one skill, choose what he or she needs to practice and print double-sided.
