This is a great Valentine activity for the ELA classroom, but it can be adapted for any classroom and used throughout the year.
It's like speed dating, but not! Bring speed writing to your classroom, and be amazed at what your students can accomplish in a short amount of time. Writing prompts/tasks change every five minutes as students work to provide a sampling of what all they have learned.
This product includes an editable Google Slide with a countdown timer that can also be adjusted. Instructions for editing the countdown timer are in the document.
The possibilities are endless! Below are a few ideas to get started:
* Poetry: Have students write one poem every five minutes on something they like or love. Types of poems might include an acrostic, haiku, limerick, diamante, couplet, cinquain, etc.
* Expository Paragraphs: Choose a concept or lesson that you have been covering in class and have students respond to various prompts about that topic.
*Essays: Have students construct the rough draft for an entire essay by limiting them to five minutes per paragraph (i.e. intro, body paragraphs, conclusion, etc.)
* Journal Responses/Creative Writing: Give students random paragraph starters and have them complete the paragraphs in under five minutes. Extension Idea: You could have students rotate the stories and add to them as each five minutes pass, instead of assigning a new prompt.
* Summarizing: Have students read a fiction or nonfiction paragraph and summarize what they read. Do all of this in under five minutes. This helps them learn to read and write concisely in a time limit.
