Students often have difficulty converting units of measurement in both the Mathematics and Science classroom. I used this short practical activity in a middle years classroom to assist many of my students who struggled with unit conversion. With guidance they were able to also appreciate the notion of reasonableness of a calculated answer. The activity is written in Metric units for the Australian classroom. The idea of incorporating it into an outdoor activity that also required them to correctly use measuring devices provided an opportunity to also link in with their Science work and the notion of fair testing in scientific method.
The activity was conducted in groups of three that also worked for the written aspects of the task that were followed up in the classroom during the second hour of the lesson.
Simply print as a booklet and distribute to your students. The Teacher will need to assist students with basic unit conversions as a prelude to the exercise and encourage students to critique their calculations for reasonableness.
