This lab is a fun and interactive way for students to learn how to calculate speed. Students work in groups to imitate the movement of various animals. They time themselves moving a certain distance and use that information to find each member's speed as that certain animal. I had the students graph their average speeds too. The students LOVED doing this because it's silly and they get to move around. We did this in the cafeteria since it was raining outside and it worked very well. This lab is editable and you can add an acceleration part to it also. The last part of the lab ties in Life Science by having them research the real animal's actual speed so they can compare their results to it.
