ACTIVITY #1: Hand a Spell it Fitness card to each student as they enter the gymnasium. Of course, already have the music playing!! Have the students’ vocabulary words, sight words, and/or core words by grade level spread out on the gym floor or in a hula hoop. Have the students take their word card along with their Spell it Fitness card to their self space and spell out the word by performing the corresponding exercise that matches each letter. Once the students finish their word card, have them put the finished word card in a red bucket (the done bucket or whatever you want to use). Then have them get a new card from the hula hoop or gymnasium floor. Have them continue the activity as long as you feel necessary. This is great for reinforcing literacy in the Physical Education class and learning about the 5 Components of Fitness.
ACTIVITY #2: Place the alphabet cards around the perimeter of the gym and/or have them hung on the walls around the gym. Spread the class vocabulary words, sight words, and/or core words by grade level out on the gym floor or in a hula hoop. Have the students select a card and spell the word by finding the letters of the word and performing the exercise assigned to each letter. When they have finished spelling the word, have them get a new card. Have the class continue the activity for as long as you feel necessary.
These cards are excellent to use as an instant activity. Just print, cut, laminate and use the cards!! I recommend printing 40 copies of the Spell it Fitness cards.
*Do individually, with a partner, or as a whole class with a projector.
*Have students see how many cards they can do in a certain amount of time.
*Great for assessing students on their locomotor skills during the activity.
