More than Sight Words...this Spell it Write! Responsive Reader
is designed to help your students learn how to correctly use three homophones that are often misused (their, there and they’re) in a hands-on way.
The book begins with mini-lessons on homophones, possession, adverbs and contractions
. This part of the book is best done with you leading…to ensure your students understand the terms and how they apply to “their”, “there” and “they’re”. There are also some helpful hints tucked into these lessons to increase your students' understanding of when to use each word.
Next, they will read engaging, yet predictable text missing the target words. There are pictures on each page that enhance the text. Your students will cut apart, unscramble and glue the letter tiles to correctly spell “their”, “there” and “they’re” in the space provided on the first six sheets. (NOTE: The 're' in “they’re” is grouped together on a single tile. So, there are the same number of tiles for each word choice. This will encourage your students to read the text carefully to discern which word tiles are needed for each grouping.)
On the next six sheets, your students will try their hand at writing the words as prompted by the text boxes. In this section the word choice is more obvious (the word shape gives it away), but the skill desired here is your students spelling the words correctly.
They will finish their book unscrambling the last sentence; gluing it in order; and writing it on the lines provided.
I've also included two review worksheets for your students to demonstrate their understanding of the use of these homophones. One sheet has multiple choice options for completing the sentences and the other is fill-in-the blank.
What a FUN way for your students to LEARN, and not just memorize, these words.
