This Spell It Write! Responsive Reader
is designed to help your students learn how to spell a word that is often misspelled, “said,” in a HANDS-ON way. The book begins with decoding the short e sound in “said” by MAPPING the sounds. This activity might be new for you both—if so, do the mapping page together.
**Mapping the sounds (a method used by Read America which I have adapted from their bestseller Reading Reflex) is key to improving your students’ reading and spelling proficiency. Have your students say each sound aloud as they touch--with their finger, or dot marker--the sound pictures. The sound pictures are both individual letters and groups of letters (like the ‘ie’ in ‘friend’) that make distinct sounds. The sound pictures in each word are grouped together so your students can easily SEE what letters make each sound.
Next, they will read engaging, yet predictable text missing the word “said.” The text is accompanied by children from around the world who will teach your students some new phrases in their languages. (A pronunciation guide is included). Your students will cut apart, unscramble and glue the letter tiles to correctly spell “said” in the space provided on the first four sheets. For the next four sheets, they will try their hand at writing “said” as prompted by the word shape. The final page is the icing-on-the-cake, where your students will unscramble and write a sentence using “said” correctly; and celebrate a job well done!
