Your beginning readers will delight in a new kind of spelling test—CVC words shown in pictures. The pictures can be printed six to a page; they can be pasted to index cards; or they can be turned into transparencies for an overhead projector. No need for you to dictate! Children can spell moving along at their own rates while they laugh at the funny pictures. Meanwhile you can circulate to notice what problems individual students are having.
Picture groups for all five short vowel, CVC words, are included. You can give a test on one vowel sound only, such as short A; mix up two vowel sounds such as short E and short I; and you can mix up an assortment of all the pictures for an overall test.
Pictures for short A include ant, bag, bat, fan, cap, man/dad, rat, map, fat, mad, pan, hat, bat, nap, mat cat; for short E bed, hen, web, net, beg, red, wet, egg, men, let, pen, vet; for short I bib, lid, pig, fin, lip, pin, pit, sit, wig, rip, six, zip; for short O box, dog, fox, cot, dot, hop, hot, pot, mom, log, top; for short U bud, cub, gum, bun, cut, hug, jug, nun, rug, mug, nut, run, sun, tub.
