Lake Learning presents the Spelling Data Notebook!
Spelling Data Program Directions
Pre-test: Every Monday, the students take a pre-test of our 5 W.O.W. words (a.k.a. “Words of the Week”). Once the tests are graded, the students color in one square on the data sheet for each word they already knew how to spell. For instance, if the student spelled 2 words correctly on the pre-test, he/she would color in 2 boxes on the data sheet. We discuss strategies to learn all 5 words and spell them correctly by the end of the week. The students are encouraged by the prospect of coloring all 5 boxes in the post-test column on Friday. (We use the DOLCH list to select our W.O.W. words.)
Bonus Words: If the student spelled all 5 words correctly on the pre-test, he/she chooses 3 “Bonus Words”, to provide an enriching challenge. The students and I work closely in selecting the Bonus Words. We often pull these words straight from words misspelled in their personal writing.
Practice: Throughout the week, students engage in hands-on spelling practice at the Word Work Station of our Daily 5 literacy time.
Post-Test: On Friday, the students take a post-test of all 5 W.O.W. words and Bonus Words, if applicable. After assessments are graded, the students color in the correct number of words they spelled in the post-test column on their data sheet in the Data Notebook.
Celebrate: The most important part… make sure to take time to celebrate each child’s improvement at the end of every week. Then, watch for motivated learners and increased spelling scores as the weeks continue. Hooray!
