Spelling Dictionary | Personal Spelling Dictionary | 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th | Upper Elementary
A Spelling Dictionary is the go-to reference for upper elementary students. It provides students with a personal copy of sight words and other theme words they use most often while writing. A personal dictionary keeps kids accountable for the words they learn throughout the year rather than relying on teachers to spell challenge words for them.
This personal spelling dictionary contains most of the sight words appropriate for grades three - six. While it contains many words students use throughout the year, it does not contain every word they’ll learn. Students are responsible for keeping their dictionary current by adding words from spelling lists, rule breakers, and other important words learned throughout the year. In my classroom, I refused to spell challenge words for students unless they had their dictionaries with them. They recorded the word correctly while I spelled it out loud. This way, I wasn’t doing all of the work for them and I never had to spell that word again!
About this resource, teachers have said:
“This has saved me! When students need help spelling a word they have a resource to use before asking me. I love the extra lines at the bottom of each page so when new words come up it is super easy to add them. Each student has one and they are always out during our writing workshop. AMAZING resource!”
“Finally! A spelling dictionary that is perfect for cycle three students :) The extra pages at the end are amazing and I love that there is a lot of room for additions. I can't wait to see my students' full dictionaries at the end of the school year.”
“This is an outstanding resource! Thank you for including all the additional pages with common words! And it is so beautiful!”

This product was designed to support my other spelling resources:
Just like in reading, students use fluency practice to improve their spelling. Hands down, the best tool I’ve found to increase students’ automaticity and see transfer to their writing. Students work in partnerships on “No Excuse” words each week and chart their progress, which helps promote ownership and success. Includes everything you need to start fluency practices in your room.
“COPS” is a simple editing process that teaches students to become responsible for correct capitalization, spelling, punctuation, and organization not only in their spelling assignments, but also in all writing completed in the classroom. This product provides you with the materials needed to use the strategy in your room.
