A Spelling Dictionary is the go-to reference for K-2 students. It provides students with a personal copy of sight words and other theme words they use most often while writing. A personal dictionary keeps kids accountable for the words they learn throughout the year rather than relying on teachers to spell challenge words for them.
This dictionary contains five levels of sight words most frequently used by primary students. While it contains many words students use throughout the year, it does not contain every word they’ll learn. Students are responsible for keeping their dictionary current by adding words from spelling lists, rule breakers, and other important words learned throughout the year. In my classroom, I refused to spell challenge words for students unless they had their dictionaries with them. They recorded the word correctly while I spelled it out loud. This way, I wasn’t doing all of the work for them and I never had to spell that word again!
