Grade 1 Standards:
These are many ways to use this pack. There are enough practice sheets to cover the whole month for each word list for repeated practice – and not all of them need to be used. For instance, I printed all the practice pages and left them in a spelling tub for further practice which can be used for early finishers, homework, ESL students etc.
Here is a guide for use:
The first section is best used as a whole group/class activity. Print the word wall and hang it on the display board for this week’s word list. Discuss/practice the words as a whole class (you could use flashcards here). Print & laminate the letter cards then cut and assemble into one envelope titled ‘Unit 1: Spelling Fun. Laminate the word building mat as well and keep for re-use. Allow each group to begin making words with their letters and hand out the recording sheet for each student.
The second section is a weekly practice set where this is handed out to each student and printed on both sides of the paper. The student will practice their words throughout the week, this can be pasted in their workbooks/folders so it isn’t lost. Teachers check it at the end of the week.
The third section are independent worksheets for word building and fluency practice. These can be printed and kept in a tub for further practice and rotation throughout the year.
The fourth section are fun practice games using the words. Color the frames is a word identification and fluency practice, Tic Tac Toe is a great partner challenge game and spelling shapes is a fun method to get the students to practice fine motor along with their spelling words.
The fourth section is a sentence building cut and paste activity where students arrange the words in order to make a full sentence, they are given a guide and further practice.
The fifth section is a weekly spelling test which could be done to monitor student progress and retention.
I use this program to reinforce spelling rules and practice throughout my classes and I have found tremendous progress with every student I’ve worked with. I especially love these for intervention/ESL students. There are plenty of differentiated tasks to cater for each and every level. I will be uploading the next few unit sets soon!
