These spelling lists were specifically created to target third grade spelling, phonics, and reading 2017 TEKS as set by TEA.
After using many spelling series, I’ve never felt that I was accurately covering the TEKS of a third grade curriculum. I wanted a small list of words that I could teach a targeted skill or phonics rule, and allow students time to apply what they had learned.
***The lists are not numbered, therefore, can be used in any order needed throughout the year. This is beneficial for approaching tests such as Benchmarks, CBAs, End of Unit tests, STAAR, etc. Each list is titled by the skill or phonics rule being taught.
Each list contains 12 words with three empty spaces for you to add words of your own to make a total of 15 words. You could add three more words that fit the rule, or add vocabulary (text talk) words that correlate with reading for the week. (Some spelling words are repeated from time to time in order for the students to review and practice what they have already learned.) Repetition is the key to remembering how to spell words, and a way to retain information of phonics rules previously learned.
-30 skill/phonics specific lists
(common syllable construction (open, closed, final stable), complex consonants, letter sound/segments/syllables, vowel digraphs, vowel diphthongs, r controlled vowels, high frequency words, synonyms, antonyms, compound words, contractions, common prefixes/suffixes, consonant doubling before adding an ending, dropping the final e, changing y to i, homophones, abstract vowels, derivational affixes, irregular words, etc.)
-2 review lists
-3 holiday lists (Fall, Winter, and Valentine)
-1 handout for the weekly spelling test
Each list also contains practice sheets, games, and/or a fun activity which can be used in class, as homework assignments, or graded assessments.
***Each list of words has the TEKS printed at the top so that it will be easy to place them in any lesson plan template.
I hope you have a fabulous year, and keep your students “spellbound” with these lists and activities.
