PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Thank you so much for your interest in my spelling/vocabulary menus. This system has been used in my classroom for the last four years, and I guarantee you the activities will motivate and inspire your students to practice their weekly spelling/vocabulary words without dread. Just like anything else, it’s all about the “presentation” when we want to FIRE-UP our students! With that said, as I introduce the way my “system” (Notice, I avoid the word, “homework”!) works, I use the analogy of my students going to their favorite restaurant. I explain that when they are given a menu at the restaurant, they are never “forced” to order something that they do not want, but instead, they have choices which allows them to pick exactly what they want.

Because rubrics emphasize “student choice” more than ever today, these menus allow your students to customize their "homework" however they choose. (You will notice that the more time consuming the activity is, the more points it is worth.) By using this menu, it truly prevents boredom with traditional homework assignments such as, Monday write your words 3x each, Tuesday put your words in ABC order, Wednesday…yadda, yadda, yadda!

With children being more involved with extracurricular activities in the evening, this system allows students to decide WHEN they want to complete their activities. If they have a scheduled ballgame, or dance practice lasted longer than usual, it is okay if they do not have time to do spelling that night. I send home their weekly study guide which includes their spelling/vocabulary words on Fridays for the following week. The menu is glued in the front of their composition notebook. Some students choose to knock out their activities over the weekend, and some choose to stretch them out over the week. Again, it is their choice because I do not check THIS homework daily…Seriously, who has time for that?! Therefore, all I ask is that they have 20 points completed when I check their notebook on Thursdays. (You may want to have your students have theirs on Fridays, so I have included a menu for Fridays as well. (I do lower the point value to 15 points on 4 day weeks. I.e. Labor Day week.) I do not allow the students to combine activities. For example, if they write their words in ABC order one night, they may not write JUST a rhyming word next to it and consider that TWO activities. The key focus is practicing the WORDS, not taking shortcuts! I also want the students to write the point value at the top of each activity. (Whoop whoop…this causes them to cross the curriculum with math as they ADD their points!) If a student does not have their activities completed on the day you choose, the student should have a consequence. I encourage my students to proofread their words carefully, and remind them that if the words are misspelled and illegible, it will be considered incomplete.
