I have created a unique way for your students to re-think how to decode words when spelling or when reading.
The scientific approach to spelling provides student(s) the opportunity to learn how to purposefully think through the “why” behind the spelling of a word.
This will help re-train the brain to fluently decode words when reading and spelling.
This activity is EDITABLE so you can enter the 2-syllable words that best fit your students’ needs.
You can create a different word for each student to do their word “experiment” or for each small group for cooperative learning.
Students choose from 3 different syllable divisions of a word.
Students make their predictions for which word is divided correctly & write out a short reason why they think so.
Then they “Work it Out” using the “Think Sheet”.
There is a writing extension, too. *Offer students the option to use assistive technology & type this activity so they can better express their ideas.*
So your students feel more like “word scientists”, it would be fun to provide Science Lab Goggles for them to wear while working on their Phonics Lab experiment!!
