Spelling tests are a challenge for our students in K and 1st grade. They must keep in mind letter formation, print concepts and sound-spelling relationships. This rubric is intended to explain to both students and their parents, a teacher's expectation for spelling. It is developmentally appropriate, taking into consideration emergent writers, and the skills of more experienced writers. You can copy this sheet on the back of the spelling test, and mark the students performance for parent review. I have seen great progress in my student's writing development as a result of this rubric and the work that parents do with their students at home, as a result of this feedback.
