I created Spelling SMART to be used on a SMARTBoard or interactive whiteboard to meet the spelling needs of my Grade 1 and 2 students. Due to requests, I have created this PowerPoint version for folks who do not have a SMARTBoard. This resource is a year-long resource.
I wanted my kiddos to be able to spell high frequency words. I also wanted them to use these lessons to learn how to write good sentences with varied beginnings and lengths, and of different types. The idea for dress-ups and sentence starters came from Betty Wiebe's Blended Structure and Style in Writing program. I also wanted the students to attempt some descriptive writing. Slide #3 lists the lesson ideas. Of course, you would have to give a mini-lesson for each new task.
Each week, I tried to use one student's name in the sample sentences. I also created two sentences with the class to model my thinking out loud. Feel free to model a sentence for each word, or let the students create their own. If they are not yet ready for sentences, have them copy out each word 5 or 10 times, or scribe their sentences, which they could then copy. Or they can copy the sentences from the slide. I expect the students to use what they've learned in previous lessons, and am always on the look-out for capitalization and punctuation.
There are 36 lessons, one for each week of school. They are fully editable and include the Fry Words #1 - 180.
Use the Neat Work slide (#5 for sentences and #7 for words only) to model how to complete the assignments neatly. I created these for my students, so please feel free to change the Canadian content to suit you.
This resource is also available in SMART Notebook for use on your interactive whiteboard.
