I made these fill-in-the-blank sentences for the spelling words in the Imagine It! reading series used in second grade. However, these worksheets do not have to be used with this reading curriculum. They could be used at a Literacy Center, for example, available to students who finish an assignment early and/or who need a review/challenge.
As my school is using the Imagine It! series and these are my students' spelling words, I currently give these sentences as spelling homework one night a week. If I ever teach a different grade, I will try to use these sentences as a review/challenge.
I used to have my students write sentences, each containing a spelling word of the week. However, because students created their own sentences, some containing a more accurate use of the spelling word than others, I found this to be too subjective to assess.
To be more consistent in my grading and to be sure that students used the words in the correct way, I created the sentences and left out the spelling word. There is a word bank containing the list of words to choose from to best complete each sentence.
If used in conjunction with the Imagine It! series, the sentences have been grouped by unit and are also made available by individual lesson. Here, they are made available by individual lesson.
