I use Sandra Wilde's Spelling Strategies and Patterns in my classroom. Since I teach the strategies at the beginning of the year, I wanted to create a test of some kind that would assess my students' understanding of the strategies. This two page document asks students to list the strategies, illustrate them, and use them in context.
This assessment can be used after teaching the following spelling strategies:
Sound it out.
Does it look right?
Try it several different ways.
Ask a friend or adult.
Use a dictionary.
Think of other words that might be similar.
Some of these are "Inside Your Head" strategies while others occur "Outside Your Head" (such as using a dictionary).
Children use all their resources except for ask a friend when they complete this test. I give them difficult words to spell, and they take their time to use their spelling strategies. Large boxes are provided for this reason. Students should show their work. Questions? Email me at email@example.com.
